7. How Are Mold Air-Sample Results Interpreted?

Mold air results should not be interpreted using a single universal "safe" or "unsafe" numerical threshold.

Instead, MEC evaluates the types and concentrations of spores found indoors, compares indoor samples with outdoor conditions, and considers whether particular fungal types appear unusually elevated indoors.

Building conditions are equally important. Visible growth, water damage, moisture readings, odors, ventilation, and recent disturbances can all affect interpretation.


For example, an indoor sample containing a fungal type that is absent or present at substantially lower concentrations outdoors may warrant additional investigation.


The goal is to determine whether the results suggest indoor fungal amplification, not simply whether mold spores were detected.
